CHAPTER 26
Since Zack was staying in Keystone for another night to finish the freelance photography assignment, I headed to Lockton again after my conversation with Ed and Deb Thorne. My first stop would be Josh Ettingerâs sporting goods store. If he was available for a quick chat, I hoped to confirm a few details about the Sky High goodies that heâd ordered for Clive Coburn the day of the murder. After that, I planned to swing by the Hi-Dive Lounge. Iâd learned a great deal from my conversation with Doug Dunwoody, but figured it would also be a good idea to have a quick chat with the Hi-Diveâs long-term mixologist.
When I stepped inside Peak Sporting Goods at half past five, a young woman in a Kelsea Ballerini T-shirt, skintight jeans and hiking boots came toward me. She looked to be eighteen or so, a tall, slim beauty with chestnut hair tied in a loose ponytail. The tag pinned to her shirt featured the name Cindy beneath a trio of smiley face emojis.
âWelcome to Peak,â she said. âWhat can I help you with?â
âIs Josh here this afternoon?â I asked.
Her face registered surprise for a brief moment before she told me that the storeâs owner was otherwise engaged.
I smiled. âOtherwise engaged?â
She nodded vigorously. When her bangs fell across her face, she pushed them away with one hand. âYes, maâam,â she said. âMr. Ettinger is almost never here in the late afternoon or evening because heâs otherwise engaged.â
âDo you know where I might find him?â I said. âI left a couple of voicemails for him, but I havenât heard back.â
She frowned. âHeâs a busy guy. I can certainly take a message if youâd like.â Her eyes jumped briefly to the cash register. âI can put a note in the bank bag. Heâll be sure and see that in the morning.â
âThank you,â I said, checking her name tag again. âHave you worked here long, Cindy?â
âThis is my fourth day,â she reported. âI used to be at the Target, but red just isnât my color. I had to go and buy, like, four red shirts when I started there. And I really tried to be okay with it, but I just look all pale and washed out if I wear anything red.â
I offered a sympathetic smile. âYou look perfect just the way you are,â I said. âSeems like maybe the change in jobs has been good for you.â
âOh, totally!â Her smile was a mile wide and bright as the sun. âItâs not busy at all really this late in the day. Plus, I can get my employee discount to buy stuff for Duncan.â
âIs that yourââ
âWeâve been going out for six weeks,â she announced, lifting her chin and giving the grin even more juice. âHeâs so cute and smart andââ She suddenly stopped and covered her mouth. âIâm so sorry, maâam. I donât know why Iâm just, like, rambling and everything.â
âItâs okay,â I said. âYouâre excited about the new job.â
Her cheeks had turned a lovely shade of scarlet.
