CHAPTER 26

Since Zack was staying in Keystone for another night to finish the freelance photography assignment, I headed to Lockton again after my conversation with Ed and Deb Thorne. My first stop would be Josh Ettinger’s sporting goods store. If he was available for a quick chat, I hoped to confirm a few details about the Sky High goodies that he’d ordered for Clive Coburn the day of the murder. After that, I planned to swing by the Hi-Dive Lounge. I’d learned a great deal from my conversation with Doug Dunwoody, but figured it would also be a good idea to have a quick chat with the Hi-Dive’s long-term mixologist.

When I stepped inside Peak Sporting Goods at half past five, a young woman in a Kelsea Ballerini T-shirt, skintight jeans and hiking boots came toward me. She looked to be eighteen or so, a tall, slim beauty with chestnut hair tied in a loose ponytail. The tag pinned to her shirt featured the name Cindy beneath a trio of smiley face emojis.

“Welcome to Peak,” she said. “What can I help you with?”

“Is Josh here this afternoon?” I asked.

Her face registered surprise for a brief moment before she told me that the store’s owner was otherwise engaged.

I smiled. “Otherwise engaged?”

She nodded vigorously. When her bangs fell across her face, she pushed them away with one hand. “Yes, ma’am,” she said. “Mr. Ettinger is almost never here in the late afternoon or evening because he’s otherwise engaged.”

“Do you know where I might find him?” I said. “I left a couple of voicemails for him, but I haven’t heard back.”

She frowned. “He’s a busy guy. I can certainly take a message if you’d like.” Her eyes jumped briefly to the cash register. “I can put a note in the bank bag. He’ll be sure and see that in the morning.”

“Thank you,” I said, checking her name tag again. “Have you worked here long, Cindy?”

“This is my fourth day,” she reported. “I used to be at the Target, but red just isn’t my color. I had to go and buy, like, four red shirts when I started there. And I really tried to be okay with it, but I just look all pale and washed out if I wear anything red.”

I offered a sympathetic smile. “You look perfect just the way you are,” I said. “Seems like maybe the change in jobs has been good for you.”

“Oh, totally!” Her smile was a mile wide and bright as the sun. “It’s not busy at all really this late in the day. Plus, I can get my employee discount to buy stuff for Duncan.”

“Is that your—”

“We’ve been going out for six weeks,” she announced, lifting her chin and giving the grin even more juice. “He’s so cute and smart and—” She suddenly stopped and covered her mouth. “I’m so sorry, ma’am. I don’t know why I’m just, like, rambling and everything.”

“It’s okay,” I said. “You’re excited about the new job.”

Her cheeks had turned a lovely shade of scarlet.
